Advising Information for Music Students

Regular academic advising is essential to making steady progress toward a music degree.

Prior to entering the music program, students meet with a professional advisor from the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences for guidance on degree selection, auditioning, music theory placement, course registration, financial aid, and other University-wide admission requirements.

Once students have begun their first semester of study as a music major and minor, they are assigned to a faculty advisor within the Department of Music. Faculty advisor assignments are based on the student’s degree program and area of study. Once assigned, the faculty advisor remains the student’s primary advisor until graduation. Faculty advisors provide guidance on coursework, degree progress, and academic decisions related to the student’s area of study.

Students who intend to graduate in a year or less should schedule a degree progress review appointment with the department chair. Often it is best to meet the semester before graduation and then again for a follow-up consultation in the final semester of study.
