Who We Are

The LGBTQ Student Resource Center is a tri-institutional office serving students at Metropolitan State University of Denver, Community College of Denver, and University of Colorado Denver. We are a resource for those seeking information and/or support related to gender identity, sexual orientation, romantic orientation, and/or similar experiences. We are a community for all.

Since its founding in 1992 as Colorado鈥檚 first campus LGBTQ+ support organization, the LGBTQ Student Resource Center has fostered acceptance, understanding, and personal growth through community education, engagement, and support services.

The LGBTQ Student Resource Center is located in the Tivoli Student Union, Room 213. Our business hours are Monday to Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. During these times visitors can browse the more than 2,000 books and videos in our library, ask about training programs, seek additional resources or just relax in our social space.

Our dedicated staff includes the director, Tyrell Allen, assistant director, Bleu Vargas, and our student staff members. Input and involvement from the entire campus community is welcomed.

Our Mission

The LGBTQ Student Resource Center is a tri-institutional student fee-funded department that strives to improve the campus climate for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer students. We do this by fostering acceptance and understanding through educating the campus community about issues related to this population and developing programming that unites diverse communities of people. Additionally, we provide support services and growth opportunities for LGBTQ students to realize their fullest potential.

Library

Our library contains 2,000+ books and DVDs covering LGBTQ topics, ranging from fictional novels and poetry to biographies and reference material that can be checked out and read at your leisure! If you鈥檇 like to take a look at our collection more easily or search for a particular topic, .

Buttons

We make over 2000 buttons every semester displaying various pride flags, pronouns, LGBTQ themes, activists, and other miscellaneous designs. We always have plenty in the backspace of our office and at any events where we are tabling, so don鈥檛 be afraid to stop by and grab a few!

Our social space is also available throughout the week for anyone seeking space to study, meet fellow students, find community, and develop a sense of belongingness on campus.

Advocacy

We assist students with difficult situations like discrimination and harassment and help students navigate campus support services.聽We advise students on topics including coming out, sexual health, relationships, social justice and combating homo/transphobia.

Education

Our office hosts identity-based events, discussions, and trainings/workshops for campus departments, campus organizations, and classrooms.聽We also provide information on campus and community resources related to sexual health, suicide and violence prevention, therapy, addiction recovery, and civil rights.

We also welcome you to browse our library of more than 2000 books and videos for additional information on a variety of topics.

Our Space

Our History

The summer of 1992 was pivotal for the advancement of the LGBTQ+ community, both nationally and locally. As national attacks against gay and lesbian rights broke out across the country, a Presidential Task Force on Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Concerns was appointed.

During this time, Metropolitan State University鈥檚 Provost Council, a division of 网曝吃瓜鈥檚 Student Affairs, and staff members from the Office of Admissions participated in an educational seminar on issues facing LGBTQ students. From this point on, 网曝吃瓜 began to require student clubs to sign a non-discrimination policy, which included sexual orientation, in order to be officially recognized by the college. Although the college supported the non-discrimination policy, ROTC and religious organizations were exempted from signing the policy.

At that point, ALAGA organized a rally and presented former 网曝吃瓜 president, Dr. Thomas B. Brewer, with a list of demands, including a task force to review campus climate issues for LGBTQ students, staff and faculty. Dr. Brewer appointed and charged the task force in the summer of 1992 and into the fall. The number one recommendation of the task force was the creation of an office to serve the needs of LGBTQ students. Shortly after the recommendations, the Student Affairs Board funded a temporary half-time position for a Coordinator of GLB Student Services.

Tyrell Allen

Director

Tyrell Allen (pronouns: she/her) is a Fat Black Femme, born and raised in Dayton, Ohio. Tyrell loves R&B music, sci-fi/fantasy tv shows, poetry, and spending time with loved ones as much as possible. She graduated from University of Northern Colorado, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Africana Studies and master’s degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs Leadership.
