This online course gives students an inside look into critical water issues affecting communities worldwide and examines how major organizations like the United Nations, UNESCO, and the World Economic Forum are coordinating solutions to meet growing water demands. Students will explore the strategies these entities are implementing to tackle water scarcity, from policy initiatives to collaborative projects, while learning about on-the-ground actions by universities and non-profits in the U.S. and Italy.
By the end of this course, you’ll gain a foundational understanding of the complexities of water management, including the ethical principles that guide decisions around water scarcity and sustainability. You’ll learn about the international and local action steps necessary for positive change, including public-private partnerships and community-based approaches. Whether you’re a student, professional, or concerned global citizen, this course offers valuable insights into water ethics, collaboration, and strategies for ensuring water access for all, empowering you to support and advocate for the common good.
The Global Perspectives on Water Management course is not needed to earn the Professional Online Water Studies Certificate, but is an additional learning opportunity for students.

Course Details and Learning Outcomes
The Global Perspectives on Water Management course surveys water issues around the world and how global entities such as the United Nations, UNESCO and the World Economic Forum are rallying efforts to meet the needs of all communities on this planet. This course will provide an overview of the water demands in countries and communities around the world, some of the key strategies of the UN and World Economic Forum, as well as some on-the-ground actions by universities and non-profits based in the U.S. and in Italy.
You will receive a certificate of completion for completing this course. This course is not included in the Professional Online Water Studies Certificate.
You may also request to receive a digital badge for each class that will be embedded with the competencies learned. This badge can be added to your resume, LinkedIn page, portfolio, or even share it with your current or future employer.
Upon completion of this course, you will gain a basic understanding of:
- Water scarcity, and how it affects the world’s population.
- Action steps, policies, and strategies of the United Nations, the UN Food and Ag Organization, UNESCO, the World Economic Forum, and non-profits
- Action steps that are being taken internationally, on-site locally, and with public-private partnerships to help more people gain access to clean water for consumption, sanitation, and hygiene.
- Water ethics around human dignity for all people, including children, the collaboration between partners for safe water, working for the common good of every village and community, and responsible earth and climate stewardship.
Instructor, Dr. Elizabeth R. McVicker
Elizabeth’s expertise in water law has her in great demand to serve on two water district boards, Center of Colorado Water Conservancy District and Headwater Authority of the South Platte, and on the Board of Coalitions and Collaboratives, an organization that advances healthy and resilient communities for adults and children through collaborative water conservation and restoration water systems. She serves as a guest speaker, panelist, and media expert for water-related events, and was instrumental in developing the One World One Water Center and the Water Studies Curriculum.
Elizabeth is a high-energy professor and brings enthusiasm and knowledge to her classes. She has a JD from the University of Denver, and a Ph.D. in Spanish Language and Literature from New York University. She teaches business ethics and sustainability courses for ÍøÆسԹÏ.
Her experience as a business owner and attorney allows her to bring a great deal of knowledge to the classroom. She is a recipient of the College of Business, Dean’s Overall Faculty Excellence Award, reflecting her commitment to teaching and the high standard of instruction she maintains. Her professional background enables students to gain a deeper understanding of how legal principles intersect with business practices in various work environments.

The One World One Water Center (OWOW) is a collaboration between Metropolitan State University of Denver and Denver Botanic Gardens. The OWOW Center strives to prepare an educated, empowered, solution-oriented Colorado citizenry to protect and preserve our precious water resources, providing a future for our children.
