From Classroom Curiosity to Career Calling
Dr. Ally Garcia’s passion for education began at سԹ (then MSCD), where she studied Speech, Language, and Hearing Science. Fascinated by language development, linguistics, and anatomy, she immersed herself in learning. “I loved working with children and families navigating autism resources. Being part of a team that helps someone communicate is incredibly rewarding,” Ally reflects.
One class, focused on multilingual learners, left a lasting impression. It not only expanded her understanding of diverse educational needs but also connected to her family’s history. “It made me grateful that research was valuing learners and families who spoke languages other than English,” she says. Reflecting on her grandparents’ experiences, who were punished for speaking Spanish in school, Ally’s dedication to equity and inclusion was born.
A Trailblazing Path in Education
Ally’s career journey is as dynamic as it is inspiring. She was among the first graduates of سԹ’s Master of Teaching program, preparing her to teach special education. Inspired by her mother, a higher education professional and former TRIO services recipient, Ally joined the سԹ team to support first-generation, low-income, and students with disabilities through TRIO Student Support Services (SSS).
Her leadership potential quickly became evident. Within two years, she was promoted to Director of TRIO SSS and later served as Assistant Dean of the Center for Equity and Student Achievement, overseeing programs designed to ensure student success. During this period, she earned her doctorate in Higher Education Policy from the University of Denver, equipping her to tackle education at a broader policy and leadership level.
Impacting Colorado at the State Level
Today, as State Director for Adult Education Initiatives at the Colorado Department of Education, Ally oversees state and federal grants supporting adult education, family literacy, and English language programs. Her office focuses on postsecondary and workforce outcomes, ensuring learners have meaningful pathways to success.
“I love thinking at the macro level, how can our office structure programs so learners get the most out of their experience?” Ally says. Her work reflects a deep commitment to equity, access, and opportunity, touching thousands of lives across Colorado.
Staying Connected to سԹ
Ally remains deeply connected to the university that shaped her. As a member of the Alumni Board, she mentors current students, collaborates with fellow alumni, and visits campus whenever possible. She also balances personal goals like running 10Ks, pitching faster on her women’s fastpitch team, publishing research, and exploring creative outlets, all of which demonstrate a continuous drive for growth.
Advice for Current Students and Alumni
Ally’s words inspire those following in her footsteps:
“Your first job doesn’t have to be your last. Be open to new ideas and opportunities. You’ve accomplished hard things you didn’t think you could. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.”
سԹ’s Lasting Influence
From her early curiosity in the classroom to her leadership at the state level, Ally Garcia embodies how سԹ equips alumni to make a difference. She credits the university’s dedicated professors, small classes, accessible tuition, and supportive environment for laying the foundation of her success.
“سԹ is home to me,” she says. “I am proud of my choice to attend and continually inspired by the faculty and staff who serve learners today.”
